What are the advantages of non-contact sensor technology?
A linear position sensor either uses a contacting or non-contacting method of measurement. One example of a contacting sensor is a potentiometer. A potentiometer has a resistive track connected to the target object where the resistance measured equates to the displacement. Potentiometers are relatively economical and readily available. These are also simple to use. However, because the sensor comes in contact with the target object, wear and tear eventually affect the sensor’s performance. As such, potentiometers are not suitable for high-friction and high-vibration applications.
In contrast, a non-contacting Linear transducer or LVDT consists of coils inside a hollow tube. The mechanism does not come in contact with the target object; thus eliminating the effect of friction.
