What these all have in common are conditions like extremely high or low temperatures, especially for artic or arid environments; high pressure, vibration or shock like in oil rigs which employ underwater devices; radiation from nuclear power plants; water like those used in many production facilities; aggressive chemicals and hazardous gases like those found in pharmaceutical manufacturing plants; and explosive dust from steelworks and industrial forges. How can I be certain that intrinsically safe position sensors are reliable?
Linear position sensors normally require certification to comply with various directives for safety in the industry. This includes the ATEX (Atmospheres Explosibles) Directives where X series sensors are suitable for use in potentially explosive environments where hazardous gases and vapours are present. The E series comply with the X in addition to protection against dust environments. M is the most extensive series that comply with both X and E directives along with being safe for mining environments. There is another set of standards for Positek sensors. This is the CSA or Canadian Standards Association where G series sensors can be used in gas and vapour hazardous environments and the H series sensors that, along with having the capabilities of the G series are also suitable for use in a dust atmosphere.
Can I operate an intrinsically safe position sensor without physically touching it?
The intrinsically safe sensors by Positek apply their patented non-contact technology. This involves the use of inductive sensor technology, resulting in the ability to function without physical contact between the components of the sensor. They are capable of remotely identifying the other parts. The application of this technology means more reliable and low-maintenance sensors that work well in hazardous environments.
