Simplifying intrinsically safe certification

One of the biggest challenges for companies operating in hazardous environments across multiple regions is ensuring compliance with intrinsically safe certification standards. Different markets require different approvals, making it essential to choose sensors that meet the necessary safety regulations.

Key intrinsically safe certifications

ATEX (Europe) – Required for equipment used in explosive atmospheres within the EU, ensuring protection in industries like oil & gas, chemicals, and manufacturing.

IECEx (UK & International) – A globally recognised standard that simplifies international trade by providing a single framework for hazardous location equipment.

CSA (USA) – Compliance for North American markets, ensuring safety in hazardous locations across various industries.

Simplifying compliance with a single sensor configuration

Ensuring compliance with intrinsically safe regulations across different markets can be complex and time-consuming. It has traditionally meant sourcing and configuring separate sensors to meet the varying regulatory frameworks.

Positek’s series of intrinsically safe sensors use a single configuration code that meets multiple certification requirements. For example, a customer requiring an ATEX-approved X100 cylinder position sensor for use in gas/vapour atmospheres can also purchase an ATEX-approved dust-safe version by simply switching the model code to E100, while keeping the configuration unchanged. Should the same product be required with CSA approvals, then it is simple to order the G100 for use in gas/vapour atmospheres or H100 for dust. This means:

  • Simplified compliance – no need to manage different configurations for each region.
  • Faster procurement and deployment – reduce lead times and approval processes by avoiding the complexity of sourcing multiple sensor versions
  • Cost and inventory efficiency – have one sensor for multiple markets
  • Seamless integration – Use standardised equipment across different locations.

Whether you operate in Europe, North America, or international markets, ensuring compliance with ATEX, IECEx, and CSA is critical to maintaining safety and efficiency in hazardous environments. By choosing the right sensor solution, businesses can reduce complexity, improve operational flexibility, and stay compliant across regions.
