Positek Linear Position Sensors

Gas and Vapour Environment

Positek’s range of high-performance, intrinsically safe position sensors have been certified for use in hazardous locations

Our intrinsically safe position sensors have been certified for use in hazardous locations having attained the following accreditations:

   •   ATEX approval
   •   IECEx approval
   •   CSA approval

"Harsh environments” typically consist of extremely high or low temperatures; high pressure, vibration or shock; radiation; water; dirt; aggressive chemicals; hazardous gases; or explosive dust. These are often found in industries such as aerospace, defence, oil and gas, and specialist vehicles. Within any harsh or potentially explosive environment, the high performance and reliability of machinery is crucial.

Environments with hazardous gas and vapours can pose a significant challenge to position sensors like those found in manufacturing plants. For these situations, intrinsically safe sensors are the best choice because of their industrial certification in terms of safety and durability. They also use Positek’s trademark non-contact technology that lessens the usual wear and tear associated with such harsh environments.

In what types of hazardous locations may Positek’s high performance, intrinsically safe position sensors be used?

Linear sensor technology is employed in numerous devices like robotics, machine tools, wire bonders, printers, and digital presses. These are found in various facilities like metal processing plants, chemical manufacturing areas, food production sites, oil exploration rigs, gas utility plants, sewage treatment plants, and large-scale dry-cleaning operations. What these all have in common are conditions like extremely high or low temperatures, especially for artic or arid environments; high pressure, vibration or shock like in oil rigs which employ underwater devices; radiation from nuclear power plants; water like those used in many production facilities; aggressive chemicals and hazardous gases like those found in pharmaceutical manufacturing plants; and explosive dust from steelworks and industrial forges. Positek’s intrinsically safe sensors are certified for use in all these environments.

How can I be certain that intrinsically safe position sensors are reliable?

Linear position sensors normally require certification to comply with various directives for safety in the industry. This includes the ATEX (Atmospheres Explosibles) Directives where X series sensors are suitable for use in potentially explosive environments where hazardous gases and vapours are present. The E series comply with the X in addition to protection against dust environments. M is the most extensive series that comply with both X and E directives along with being safe for mining environments. There is another set of standards for Positek sensors. This is the CSA or Canadian Standards Association where G series sensors can be used in gas and vapour hazardous environments and the H series sensors that, along with having the capabilities of the G series are also suitable for use in a dust atmosphere.

Can I operate an intrinsically safe position sensor without physically touching it?

The intrinsically safe sensors by Positek apply their patented non-contact technology. This involves the use of inductive sensor technology, resulting in the ability to function without physical contact between the components of the sensor. They are capable of remotely identifying the other parts. The application of this technology means more reliable and low-maintenance sensors that work well in hazardous environments.

The intrinsically safe sensors in www.positek.com can be found in numerous devices as simple as adjustable car seats to complex feats of engineering like automated production lines. Among them are the assembly lines found in industrial manufacturing plants that require only the most rigorous certification to be able to operate. They are also safe against the entry of corrosive vapours and gases that might cause catastrophic electrical failures in the system.

Positek’s industrial position sensor technology is therefore well suited for use in gas atmospheres; unlike many lvdt sensors, Positek’s ATEX, IECEX and CSA approved position sensors operate using a single sensing coil, leaving them less vulnerable to common fractures and breakages. As with every linear sensor that we produce, our intrinsically safe sensors utilise non-contact technology, which enables them to operate without wear or interference in all applications.

Certified Equipment

The three classifications of ATEX certified equipment that we supply are as follows:

  • 'X' Series Sensors - position sensors for use in potentially explosive environments where hazardous gases / vapours are present
  •     'E' Series Sensors - position sensors for use in potentially explosive environments where hazardous gas / vapour and dust is present
  •     'M' Series Sensors - position sensors for use in potentially explosive hazardous gas / vapour, dust and mining environments

The classifications of CSA certified equipment that we supply are as follows:

  •      'G' Series Sensors - position sensors for use in potentially explosive environments where hazardous gases / vapours are present
  •      'H' Series Sensors - position sensors for use in potentially explosive environments where hazardous gas / vapour and dust is present

Where hazardous gases may be present, and in order for our sensors to comply with regulations enforced by CSA, ANZEX, IECEx and ATEX, equipment must be used in conjunction with our galvanically isolated amplifier; designed to supply the sensor with a nominal 5V and to transmit the buffered output to a safe area.

Please speak to a member of our sales team today to discuss your CSA, IECEx or ATEX equipment requirements. The sensors within our range can be custom designed to meet any special requirements you may have, and can be shipped out in as little as 1-2 working days.
