What is Linear Displacement?

Linear Displacement is often a movement which requires measurement and can be measured in either inches or millimetres using linear position sensors.

Linear Displacement can be defined as the movement of an object in a straight line along a single axis up and down or side to side.

Linear Displacement Measurement Devices and Technologies

There are different kinds of linear position sensors used to measure linear displacement; different types of technology are better suited to certain applications. To help select the best sensor for you, contact usto discuss your application.

Potentiometric Position Sensors - Also called aPot, short for Potentiometer, one of the most common types of position sensor. Potentiometers use a sliding contact on a resistive track to measure the position of the slider which is connected to themoving component.

Capacitive Transducers - The relative position of moving parts is measured by the capacitance between two or more elements.


Eddy-Current Linear Displacement Sensor these are a type of inductive sensor which uses Eddy-Current formation to detect linear movements. The movement of a component affects the losses within the conductor, which provides a measure of the displacement.

LVDT sensors - These are a type of non-contacting linear sensor, they have infinite mechanical life as they arewear-free. They have an iron core which is moved within the input windings to affect the signal in the two output windings. The difference between the two outputwindings defines the position.

Positek Inductive sensor technology Our own sensor range has some similarities with LVDT sensors as they are non-contacting and have the friction free long life that you would expect.They operate at high frequency and have simple single layer coils of robust wire.

The overall length is only a little longer than the range of movement which means they take up less space than an LVDT for the same range of motion.They do not measure losses in the coil but instead measure the change in inductance and reject loss changes. This results in a sensor that is inherently temperature stable. The frequency response is high, making them useful in fast servo loops due to the lack of phase shift in the signal.
