Intrinsically safe equipment systems provide a safe operating environment for personnel and equipment by restricting the electrical energy transmitted into a hazardous area. Unlike an explosion proof sensor, intrinsically safe sensors are physically unable to produce a spark strong enough to cause ignition. This is what makes the Positek intrinsically safe sensor one of the safest position measurement devices on the market. All of our intrinsically safe position sensors must be used with a galvanically isolated three port amplifier, designed to supply the sensor with a nominal 5V and to transmit the buffered output to a safe area. We also supply a range of current limiting devices that can be used alongside most linear sensors.
Not only do our sensors limit the threat of an explosion, but as with every position sensor that we produce, our intrinsically safe sensors harness Positek’s own, non-contact technology. The benefits of a contactless position sensor include added durability and reliability, even in the harshest of environments, over alternative technologies such as magnetostrictive linear potentiometers and LVDTs.
Our Position Sensors interpret the information and convert it into an analogue or digital signal. This signal is then displayed into an output format like a digital readout or a motion controller. The Positek intrinsically safe position sensors are one of the best in the market in terms of safety because they isolate the large electrical output and buffer them into a safe area.
Intrinsically safe position sensors limit the risk of explosion by limiting the energy to the device. Although they are not able to completely prevent the explosion they can make an area much safer than a standard position sensor.
They work on a smaller voltage than a standard sensor, limiting the voltage decreases the risk of any sparks forming during use. This is important in a highly flammable area as reduces the risk of explosions etc.
Position sensors are deployed in hazardous areas like;
What these all have in common are the presence of flammable gas or liquids. Sensors, being electro-mechanical devices, have the basic risk of creating sparks that can trigger explosions in these sites therefore an intrinsically safe sensor is required.
Our intrinsically safe position sensors are shown above.
If our standard range of intrinsically safe equipment does not fulfil your requirements, we can customise any intrinsically safe sensor within our range to meet your specification. Please contact a member of our engineering team about your position sensor design today.
