• Capacitance sensors. This is a non-contact type of linear sensor and works by measuring the difference in voltage applied between the sensor and its target. Capacitance sensors can either be used in conductive and non-conductive material but is sensitive to environmental parameters such as air.
• Eddy current sensors. This is another non-contact type sensor consisting of two coils. One active coil is influenced by a conducting target, and another coil which completes a bridge circuit to provide temperature compensation.
• Photoelectric sensors. This includes fibre optic, optical triangulation, and optical time of flight. This functions by using the projection and detection of light.
• Ultrasonic sensors. In contrast with photoelectric sensors, this type of sensor works by using the projection and detection of sound.
• Linear potentiometers. This type of sensor produces a resistance output which is proportional to an object’s position.
