What is a Linear Position Sensor?

A linear position sensor is a type of measuring device which measures movement and displacement in a linear motion.

A linear positionsensor is a type of measuring device which measures movement and displacement in a linear motion. There are various types of linear position sensor on the market today. They are vital within many industries and can be used for monitoring control and ensuring safety in machinery.

Linear position sensors are part of our product range here at Positek. All of our linear position sensors are manufactured on-site and use our own PIPs technology.

Types of Linear Position Sensor

There are many different technologies which can be used within linear position sensors these different technologies can be group into two different categories or types they are contacting and non-contacting.

All Positek sensors use our own PIPs technology which is non-contacting technology. PIPS stands for Positek Inductive Position Sensor. Within our linear position sensor range a high frequency coil is used as the displacement sensing element, it uses far fewer turns than that of an LVDT, another type of non-contacting linear sensor, this gives PIPs sensors better stroke to length ratios than that of their competitor linear position sensors.

Other types of linear position sensor technologies include

  • Capacitive Sensors
  • Potentiometers
  • Magnetostrictive sensors
  • LVDT
  • Eddy Current Sensors
  • Inductive Position Sensors

Many of these technologies are available from companies within Variohm Holdings.

What is a Linear Position Sensor Used for?

Linear Position Sensors have many uses as position detection is vital within many industries. Some application areas are;

  • Medical
  • Aerospace
  • Agriculture
  • Industrial Machinery
  • Automation
  • Manufacturing

Some specific applications that use linear position sensors are;

  • Paper reel machines
  • Bakery machines
  • Forest logging machines
  • Robotics
  • Mobile vehicle applications
  • Agricultural machinery

To find out more about these applications take a look at our case studies page.

Linear Position Sensors from Positek

Our linear positionsensors are manufactured onsite, this means they can be fully customised to your requirements. We also have a short turn around time and have products delivered within 2 working days of placing an order.

If your application is in a specialised environment we have intrinsically safe options and submersible options available.

PIPs sensors have the following advantages

  • High accuracy
  • Long life
  • High reliability
  • Custom made
  • Intrinsically safe versions
  • Submersible versions
  • Wear free long life

All of the linear position sensors we offer use PIPs technology, however, we can source other technologies within our group so make sure you contact us regarding your application and we will do our best to find a linear position sensor to suit you.
